1. Texting While Driving

Texting behind the wheel is the current poster child for negligent driving behavior, and with good reason. Texting is one of the most dangerous driving behaviors, as it takes your hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, and also distracts you mentally. It should come as no surprise that most states, West Virginia included, have banned text messaging while driving.

2. Eating & Drinking

While drinking alcohol and driving is widely known to be an extremely dangerous activity, drinking other beverages can be distracting as well. Drinking hot coffee can be particularly dangerous, as it can spill and cause burns. Even worse, it can take a drivers attention completely off the road and can lead to a serious crash.

3. Grooming

In the morning, the roadways are often filled with drivers who are attempting to apply makeup, shave, or even brush their teeth while driving. While this may save them a few minutes in the morning, it can also lead to a serious or even fatal car accident. Any behavior which takes your attention, eyes, or hands off of the wheel can be dangerous, and grooming certainly falls into that category.

4. Tending to Children/Passengers

When a driver is distracted by their passengers, they have reduced reaction time and may even take their eyes off the road. When the passengers are young children, however, they can be extremely distracting. It is not uncommon for parents to turn fully around in their seat to admonish a child, and even just two young kids fighting in the backseat can completely take a drivers attention off the road.

5. Smoking & Vaping

Lighting up a cigarette can require both of a driver’s hands, and smokers generally drive with one hand on the wheel. However, vaping while driving is also quickly becoming a dangerous trend as many people switch to e-cigarettes or vaporizers. Many of these devices require substantial physical and mental attention to refill and set up.
